Italian Writer and Social Activist

Leonardo Sciascia was an Italian writer and social activist known for his thrilling novels about the Sicilian Mafia.

He was born on January 8, 1921, in Racalmuto, Sicily. Sciascia made his literary debut in 1950 with a collection of poems that received praise from Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1953, he was awarded the Luigi Pirandello Prize.

Public and Political Career

In 1975, Sciascia was elected to the Palermo City Council as an independent candidate representing the Italian Communist Party.
